Where is the race?
All of our events begin in front of the Hart Main Street Office in downtown Hart, Michigan. Hart is a small, beautifully historic town in northwestern Michigan about 10 miles east of Lake Michigan. If you’re using GPS, you may use our address: 49 South State Street, Hart, Michigan 49420. I’d suggest coming up State Street from the south, as parts of the road may be closed for the events.
5K Run/Walk
The race begins with a nice downhill run towards the first bridge over Hart Lake. As hills generally do, this one next goes up, and into a newer residential neighborhood along the north side of Hart Lake. You’ll soon turn south (and downhill) and pass over the second bridge where the river turns into Hart Lake. Up ahead, you’ll turn west and re-enter the Hart city limits, then move up into an older neighborhood of the city towards the Hart Historic District, passing by the old schoolhouse and pavilion. The last mile is relatively flat; you’ll pass by older homes as you wind through the finish line…which is nicely preceded by a gentle downhill slope.
5K Divisions
The race divisions are 9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70 plus. Top male and female racers will receive custom trophies. Top three males and females in each age division will receive medals. A souvenir race t-shirt is included in the registration fee. Top-finishing hand cyclists will receive 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies.
The Youth 1 mile
We again feature a 1 mile fun run for those aged 4 to 14. This race starts at 8 a.m. and stays on the streets of northern Hart, forming a large rectangle to return to the start. The age divisions here are 4-7, 8-11, and 12-14. There will be no gender separations. Winners in their divisions will receive medals. T-shirts included here, too.
The Bridge Walk
If you’d rather not be timed and would enjoy a slightly shorter distance, participate in the Bridge Walk and enjoy a nice saunter around Hart Lake. This leisurely 2.2 mile stroll is enjoyed by tourists and locals alike. Enjoy the scenery and the companionship as you indulge in a bit of exercise. Reward yourself afterwards with breakfast, brunch or lunch at one of our fine downtown eateries! The bridge walk group will meet after the last of the 5k runners have left the immediate area. Race t-shirt is an extra cost option.

HART MAIN STREET RE-NAMES RACE TO HONOR RICH TOMPKINS
“What the mind can conceive, the body can achieve” are words that resonate with anyone who was trained by Rich Tompkins. He was a great friend of the Hart Main Street program, and a long-time volunteer at their “Hart Healthy Labor Day Race.” Rich passed away suddenly in late July.
“He leaves such a gaping hole behind,” said Hart Main Street Manager, Ingrid Pearson. “He always helped out behind the scenes, made sure that the race course was exactly 5 kilometers long, and that the route was well marked.”
The “Hart Healthy Labor Day 5K” has been renamed “The Rich Tompkins Memorial Race.” We invite everyone to come and run in Coach Tompkins’ memory on Labor Day, Monday, September 7th.
Runners from Fremont and Hart alike were inspired by Rich. He was the Executive Director of the Michigan High School Coaches Association, and also was inducted into the Muskegon Coaches Hall of Fame, Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame, National High School Coaches Hall of Fame, High School Fremont Athletic Club and the Michigan State University Varsity Club.
“We are so grateful to Rich’s widow, Carole, for allowing us to honor Rich in this way,” said Pearson. “It just seemed like the best way we could pay tribute to Rich, who was such a great friend and mentor to so many. He will be missed.”
“Mrs. Tompkins has asked that Harvey Weaver shoot the starter pistol in Coach’s memory. Mr. Weaver was Rich’s coach before ‘Coach’ was a coach. This will be a moving and memorable moment for us all.”
The 5k is a US Track & Field Association certified race. There is also hand cycling, a Youth Mile, and a 2.3 mile Bridge Walk immediately following the 5k start. To register, please visit

Get Training & Get Healthy!
The 2015 Hart Healthy Labor Day 5k is right around the corner, on Monday, September 7th. Whether you are a runner, a hand-cyclist, or a walker; an adult or a kid, there's a way for YOU to participate! The Youth Mile kicks off the morning at 8am, and the 5K follows at 8:30am.
Details on the Bridge Walk to follow...
Our 5K route has been re-certified for runners and hand-cyclists!
"The purpose of the USATF course certification program is to produce road race courses of accurately measured distances. For any road running performance to be accepted as a record or be nationally ranked, it must be run on a USATF-certified course. In addition, the certification program is very important to the average road racer, as well as those of exceptional speed. Most runners like to compare performances run on different courses, and such comparisons are difficult if course distances are not reliable. No one can truly establish a personal best if the course distance is not accurate." -- USA Track & Field
